Bone Density Testing

Bone Density TestingBone density testing is a fast, easy and painless procedure. It is the most accurate way to determine if you already have osteoporosis or might be at risk to develop it in the future. Although there are different machines used to measure bone density, the most common is called a DEXA scanner, which is a specialized x-ray unit. A DEXA scanner is able to measure the calcium content of your spine, hip and wrist bones – the most common sites for osteoporotic fractures – by taking x-rays. The procedure takes only ten to 15 minutes. You will be weighed and measured prior to the test, since the machine requires this information to extrapolate your results. Much like an MRI, you will need to remove any metal objects before entering the scanner. You will then lie flat on the DEXA scanner table, which is moved underneath an overhead scanning arm in order to obtain bone scans. Bone density testing is available at Guthrie's Troy Community Hospital and Guthrie facilities in Sayre, Towanda, Big Flats, and Ithaca.

Osteoporosis, or porous bone, is a disease in which there is a loss of bone mass and destruction of bone tissue. This process causes weakening of the bones and makes them more likely to break. The bones most often affected are the hips, spine, and wrists.Bone Density Testing
