Helicopter Landing Zone Information

 

Landing Zone (LZ) Guidelines

  • Approximately 100’ x 100’ area. (100ft. = approximately 30 large steps.)
  • LZ and aircraft approach should be clear of wires, towers, vehicles, people and loose objects.
  • Firm ground with less than an 8-degree slope.
  • LZ to be marked with one flare in each corner.
  • No white lights or spotlights are to be directed toward helicopter or LZ.
  • Keep emergency red lights on.
  • No smoking within 100’ of aircraft.
  • Do not approach helicopter unless escorted by crew.
  • Stay clear of tail rotor at all times.
  • No traffic or vehicles within 100’ of the aircraft.
  • Corner personnel should stand at least 25’ away from lit flares.

Helicopter Activation Check List

  • Determine need. (This can occur prior to your/unit arrival.)
  • Place aircraft on standby or immediate response.
  • Relay your radio frequency and call sign to Guthrie Communications Center
  • Relay the exact location of the LZ, including cross streets and landmarks.
  • Designate landing zone safety officer (LZ command).

Landing Zone Report

  1. Describe LZ in relationship to terrain.
  2. Examples: The LZ is located on top of a hill.

    The LZ is located in a valley.

  3. Describe major landmarks near the LZ.
  4. Examples: Rivers/Major Highways/Factories/Water Towers

  5. Estimate the distance between LZ and nearest town.

Fill in blanks with a direction: North/South/East/West

  1. LZ is located ______________________________ of nearest town.
  2. There are wires on the _______________________ side of LZ.
  3. There are other obstructions to the ____________________________.
  4. Winds are out of the _____________________________.
  • Describe type of surface LZ is on.

Examples: Grass/Dirt/Gravel/Cement

  • Confirm that LZ is secure, flares are lit, white lights and blue lights are off, and all personnel are at a safe distance from LZ.
  • Upon aircraft landing, stand by for crew to approach you.
