CARDIAC - Special ServicesIn addition to an extensive array of diagnostic and treatment services, Guthrie offers a diverse menu of specialized programs to meet the individualized needs of its cardiac patients. These programs include:
An irregular heartbeat, known as arrhythmia, can cause the heart to beat abnormally slow, fast or erratically. If left untreated, this potentially debilitating condition can be life threatening. Guthrie’s Arrhythmia Center provides diagnosis and treatment for those suffering from arrhythmia, as well as consultation, education and research. Guthrie’s Arrhythmia Center is internationally-recognized and currently treats 1,500 patients --well above the national average of 247. Despite this impressive patient load, its experienced staff provides a consistent level of care along with a high success rate.
Guthrie’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab performs a number of diagnostic and therapeutic services in order to evaluate heart conditions and determine the best method of treatment. Services include coronary angioplasty, cutting balloon angioplasty, atherectomy, stent placement, cardiac ablation, pacemaker implantation, cardiodefibrillator implantation and cardiac catheterization. The lab is staffed by cardiologists, specially-trained nurses and technicians.
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) Clinic Heart failure is a recurrent condition that can lead to disability and a great deal of anxiety. Guthrie's Congestive Heart Failure Clinic is a highly-specialized treatment program dedicated to reducing disability and improving quality of life. The clinic provides diagnosis, management of symptoms and preventive care. Through an individualized program of medication, dietary modification, education and exercise, many of the symptoms of congestive heart failure can be alleviated. Click here for some guidelines concerning the successful management of CHF.
Electrophysiology LabThe Electrophysiology Lab at Guthrie performs studies of the heart’s electrical system in order to evaluate heart rhythm disturbances (arrhythmia). They also implant pacemakers and ICDs. This advanced diagnostic lab uses sophisticated computer-aided techniques to assist in formulating effective treatment plans for patients with heart rhythm irregularities. Electrophysiologists (cardiologists with specialized training in electrophysiology), nurses and technicians make up the lab’s collaborative team. The Electrophysiology Lab is part of the Cath Lab.
Heart rhythm disturbances and other medical problems may signal the need for a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to normalize heartbeat. A cardiac pacemaker is an electronic device that remedies an abnormally slow heart rhythm. It does so by tracking the patient’s heartbeat and generating a slight electrical signal that causes the heart to beat faster. An ICD is designed to slow or normalize a heart that beats too fast or beats erratically. An electronic device the size of a deck of cards is placed in the chest to monitor the patient's heartbeat. If the heart begins beating too fast, a small electrical signal stops the abnormal rhythm and returns it to normal. Guthrie’s Pacemaker Clinic provides programming services and care management for patients following implantation of cardiac pacemakers and ICDs. The clinic’s staff is highly experienced and committed to patient education. Through research and developments in technology, Guthrie’s Pacemaker Clinic is able to offer consistent, high-quality care to its patients. For convenient and expedient assessment of heart rhythm disturbances in pacemaker patients, a trans-telephonic monitoring service is available. This service allows patients to transmit information directly from their pacemakers over the telephone to the clinic. A heart rhythm assessment may then be performed while the patient is at home. The Pacemaker Clinic staff will evaluate the transmitted information and respond promptly and appropriately.

am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday 8 to 11
am, Saturday and Sunday (emergencies and inpatients
only) Mobile services offered at Troy Community
Hospital on Wednesday mornings and at Guthrie
Medical Group's Corning Centerway office on Monday
mornings and Thursday afternoons. Guthrie’s Vascular Lab, established in 1985,
performs a wide variety of tests designed to help
your doctor learn more about your arteries and
veins. The strength of your vascular system,
including the abnormal enlargement of vessel walls
or blockages in arteries due to smoking, poor diet
or hereditary disease, plays a large role in your
overall health. Knowing about your vascular health
can be important in helping your primary care
physician decide what treatments are necessary for
you to continue living healthy. People with poor
vascular health are at risk for blood clots, stroke,
abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture or peripheral
vascular disease. Guthrie’s Vascular Lab is staffed by registered
vascular technologist Lynn Cady and technical
director Brad Fuller, and is overseen by medical
director Lawrence Sampson, MD, Guthrie vascular
surgeon. The Vascular Lab offers non-invasive
carotid artery stroke screenings that take as little
as 15 minutes. Using ultrasonography paired with
Doppler technology and color imaging, this test
provides a 98% accuracy rate in diagnosing the
extent of carotid artery disease. Other tests
include arterial flow studies, ultrasound to screen
for abdominal aortic aneurysm, as well as ankle
brachial index testing, venous ultrasound and duplex
imaging to screen for peripheral vascular disease.
For Vascular Lab patients requiring surgical
intervention, such as a carotid endarterectomy
procedure to treat blocked carotid arteries that
place patients at risk for stroke, Guthrie has
several board-certified vascular surgeons on staff. If you are at risk for or have been told you have
vascular disease and would like to be evaluated in
Guthrie’s Vascular Lab, speak with your primary
care provider to arrange a referral or call
