Highlights
Experience is paramount in medicine. If you have never seen it before, you are not likely to recognize it at first exposure. At Guthrie, you will see it. An incredibly diverse array of patients flow through our doors on an annual basis.
As a tertiary care referral center, many difficult and unusual cases from a 100 mile radius are sent to Sayre. You will be privileged to see these patients in the company of some of the finest subspecialists in the country. You will be part of a team that may include subspecialists from other disciplines that are needed to manage patients of this complexity. It is expected that you will learn all the major procedures by the end of the first year.
Pathophysiology and differential diagnoses are stressed heavily on management rounds to help broaden your horizons. Attending physicians frequently call you to the office to see these patients after they have recovered.
The facility is one that must be seen to be believed. People comment, “I can’t believe all this is out here in the middle of nowhere.” We like it out here and we are very grateful that we have such a pleasant facility. Robert Packer Hospital is a state-of-the-art institution with a nationally renowned cardiac surgery program, level-2 trauma service, and its own helicopter. There are three cardiac catheterization labs and the hospital was ranked as one of the 100 best cardiovascular hospital in the country. Robert Packer Hospital is also ranked in the top 100 hospitals in Quality Improvement and was recently named as one of the most wired hospitals in the country.
The workload is designed to enhance doctor skills. You will work with an integrated health care team. Drawing blood, starting IVs, or transporting patients is taken care of by our excellent nursing, laboratory and support staff. The respiratory therapy team is first class and a tremendous asset to the residency program. Across the street, is the Guthrie Research Institute for clinical research.
