RESIDENCY
FAMILY MEDICINE: PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Hands-on Clinical Experience
Guthrie family medicine residents see their continuity patients in our Family
Medicine Center that opened in 1994. Residents treat a very broad range of
patients, and acquire first-hand experience performing procedures.
Ready Access to Subspecialty Physicians
Nearly every field is represented in our large, multi-specialty group practice.
The sub-specialists welcome the opportunity to consult and teach, and are
readily accessible to family medicine residents.
Diverse Faculty with a Wide Variety of Interests
We recognize residency training as a great opportunity for human growth and
development, shared by both residents and faculty. Our faculty is diverse and
includes physicians, nurse practitioners and psychologists. In addition to the
core faculty, residents work with more than 100 full-time, and part-time
physicians, coordinators of all major inpatient services, community-based family
physicians,
psychologists and psychiatrists.
We emphasize ongoing faculty development. Four of our core
faculty members are fellowship trained in faculty development. This advanced
training emphasizes teaching skills, curriculum development, resident mentoring,
and scholarly activity.
Another faculty member has
fellowship training in sports medicine and also services at the Director of
Guthrie Sport Medicine.

First-Class
Facilities
Robert Packer Hospital is a university-affiliated tertiary care teaching
hospital with up-to-date equipment. Since 2003 the hospital has utilized
computerized physician order entry, which enhances patient safety and patient
care by using evidence-based treatment guidelines.
Superb Ancillary Services
Guthrie emphasizes education versus service for residents. Residents spend
their time focusing on learning and are supported by a team of ancillary
personnel with full 24/7 laboratory, phlebotomy, and transportation services
available for patients.
Non-Competing Residency
Guthrie offers training in Internal Medicine, General Surgery and Vascular
Surgery. Our residents experience a collegial and noncompetitive atmosphere.
Family Medicine Residents are the primary residents for obstetrics and
pediatrics.
Community Involvement
Family medicine training at Guthrie includes more than clinic and hospital
experience. Residents have opportunities to visit patients in nursing homes and
make house calls, perform sports physicals in the local schools, participate in
sports events, and contribute to health education programs.
The Working Environment
Resident wellness is
supported through Balint training in the doctor-patient relationship,
resident-faculty mentors, and resident personal and professional development
groups. The atmosphere is cooperative and supportive, creating a pleasant work
environment.
