FAMILY MEDICINE - State Medical Student Opportunities

Family Medicine Rotations

The student becomes an integral part of the family medicine team, learning from a skilled yet diverse group of attending physicians, residents and nurse practitioners.

Nice mix of outpatient and inpatient experience which can be tailored to meet the student’s needs.

Experience the full spectrum of family medicine practice including:
- Family-oriented maternity care
- Prenatal care and deliveries
Numerous procedures
- Skin surgery
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy
- Colposcopy
- No scalpel vasectomy
- Casting/splinting
- Joint injection
Sports medicine
- Walk-in sports clinic
- Sports physicals
- Game/event coverage (based on the season)
Behavioral Science
- Strong emphasis on the doctor-patient relationship
Osteopathic principles and practice
- Weekly educational sessions
- Use of OMT strongly encouraged in the office and hospital
- Work 1:1 with the osteopathic residency director who is fellowship trained in OMT
- Home visits
Opportunity to work on an office-based research project

Sports Medicine:

Learn the full spectrum of primary care sports medicine and how to include it in your practice
Participate in regular sports medicine walk-in clinics
Learn and fine tune your joint injection skills
Opportunities to learn and assist in casting, splinting and joint injection
Participate in sports preparticipation physicals
Assist with medical coverage of sporting events
Football
Wrestling
Marathon
Work with athletic trainers in the rehab department and at the schools
Learn the opportunities that exist to expand knowledge and scope of practice regarding primary care sports medicine (fellowships, jobs etc)

Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine:

Maximum exposure to Fellowship trained DO attending as well as DO residents and students
Weekly OMT conference
- Didactics
- Hands on training
- OMT clinics
- Hospital rounds
Assist with literature search and protocol regarding future office based OMM research
