RESIDENCY GUTHRIE: About Our Area
The geographic area served by Guthrie Health is a peaceful and pleasant environment in which to live, train and work. There are many lovely small towns within 15 miles of the campus in Sayre, Pennsylvania with first-rate school systems. There are not the problems associated with city and urban areas such as a high crime rate and traffic congestion. The proximity and accessibility to the Interstate puts you within 40 minutes of the cities of Binghamton, New York and Elmira, New York which both offer many amenities such as regional airports, an array of shopping, and cultural venues. Several colleges and universities are located within a 30 to 45 minute drive from Sayre which include: Binghamton University, Elmira College, Ithaca College, Cornell University, Corning Community College and Broome Community College. The quality of life available in this region is exceptional.
Guthrie – The Best of Both Worlds One of the best aspects of completing a residency at Guthrie is the quality of life residents and their families enjoy. Small-town living is at its best here, whether in Sayre or one of the regions 20 other communities. Our communities are safe, clean and friendly. Our children do well in the excellent public or private school systems in the region. Residents get to know their colleagues and patients as neighbors and become valued members of the community. Here in northern Pennsylvania, the rural lifestyle offers a relaxing haven between busy days at the hospital. Many of our residents live within easy walking distance to the hospital and are only minutes away from a host of recreational activities. You can spend your time away from the hospital relaxing or engaging in the wide variety of things to do in the region – the choice is up to you!
Places to Go and Things to Do This region offers everything from championship golf courses to Broadway-caliber theater; winery tours to mountain biking, professional athletics to antiquing. The city of Ithaca, New York, less than an hour away, is a bustling Ivy League college town, and one of the area’s most popular destinations. Its gorges and waterfalls, cultural events and unique shops offer something for everyone. Cornell University features the spectacular Johnson Art Museum. Music enthusiasts can enjoy a concert at Ithaca College’s world-famous music school on the lovely hilltop campus. Visitors enjoy sailing on beautiful Cayuga Lake or visiting one of the area’s three state parks. In addition, families can spend a fun-filled afternoon at the interactive Sciencenter. To the west lies Elmira, New York, where Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) completed much of his writing. The Clemens Performing Arts Center features everything from local to international performers. At the First Arena you can watch a UHL hockey game, skate, or catch a variety of live entertainment and exhibits. For a unique experience, take a ride on a glider plane at Harris Hill.
Watkins Glen, New York, is nearby where you can hike the Watkins Glen Gorge, spend a lovely day on the shores of Seneca Lake, or enjoy a race at the world famous Watkins Glen International racetrack. A little further to the west is Corning, New York where you can tour the Corning Museum of Glass, take a Steuben Glass Factory Tour, visit the Rockwell Museum, or journey along historic Market Street.
About a half-hour drive to the east, in Binghamton,New York, the Anderson Center for the Arts features everything from international performing artists to popular arts to student recitals. At the Broome County Arena you can catch a UHL hockey game, a concert, or even a circus! Visitors can enjoy a Binghamton Mets minor league baseball game at the NYSEG stadium or take their family to explore the Roberson Museum and Science Center or to the Ross Park Zoo for a day of adventure.

Stunning Surroundings Natural beauty abounds in the Twin Tier and Finger Lake Regions. There are recreational activities to enjoy in every setting. Our lovely waterways are perfect for fishing, kayaking, sailing or water sports. For those of you who prefer hiking, biking or horseback riding, you will find every type of trail, from quiet country roads to the "Grand Canyon" of Pennsylvania. Downhill and cross-country skiing is available throughout our region and the spectacular trails will have you looking forward to winter.
