Guthrie ushers in “new era” of cancer care

Sayre, PA – After years of planning and months of renovations, Guthrie is opening the doors to a new $3.9 million Cancer Center on its Sayre campus. The 17,000 square foot space is dedicated to providing the most comfortable, convenient and relaxing environment possible for patients receiving treatment for cancer.

"This new Cancer Center represents a great step forward in cancer treatment," states Guthrie Clinic President/CEO Joseph Scopelliti, MD, President/CEO. He adds, "We understand that cancer treatments often are physically and emotionally draining for patients, and their families. As a result, every aspect of this amazing new space has been designed with patients needs in mind, so that we can offer them the most positive experience possible during what is certainly a difficult time in their lives."

The Center also boasts its own private laboratory, which will be appreciated by patients who must undergo frequent blood draws to monitor the effect of treatment on their overall health. Another Cancer Center convenience is the dedicated pharmacy mixing room, which means patients will receive intravenous chemotherapy treatments to be soon after they arrive for treatment. In addition, there is an information resource room with Internet access, where patients or family members can learn more about their disease.

Chief of Oncology, Philip Lowry, MD, adds, "We are very proud to be opening this beautiful new Cancer Center to our patients. The layout of treatment rooms and support areas allows our hematologists/oncologist, nurses, and support staff to deliver comprehensive care that is truly patient-centered." The Cancer Center provides appropriately designed space that will minimize the movement of patients from one area to another as they meet with physicians, undergo examinations and/or treatments.

The needs of family members who accompany patients to their appointments haven't been forgotten. The Center offers spacious infusion treatment rooms, so family members can stay with their loved ones while they receive treatment. Or, they can make use of the comfortable surroundings of the large waiting room area. The decor for the Cancer Center is based on a soft, soothing color scheme, which adds to the comfortable atmosphere of the entire area.

This extraordinary new Cancer Center is complemented by the dedication, commitment and talent of the entire Cancer Center team. This new Cancer Center represents the first phase of enhanced cancer services provided throughout Guthrie Health. A community open house will be held Saturday, Nov. 20, from 10 AM to 12 noon. Tours of the new Cancer Center will be available.
