Guthrie Corning Hospital Makes Immunization Action Coalition HepB Birth Dose Honor Roll

Corning, N.Y. – Guthrie Corning Hospital has been recognized by the Immunization Action Coalition (IAC) and New York State Department of Health for achieving one of the highest reported rates in the state for its work to protect newborns from hepatitis B virus infection.

“We take our responsibility to protect babies from life-threatening infections like hepatitis B very seriously,” said Lori Ferguson, RNC, Director of Maternity Services Guthrie Corning Hospital. “The Birthplace at Guthrie Corning Hospital is proud of being recognized as a best practices organization for helping to prevent the transmission of perinatal hepatitis B.”

As of November 20, Guthrie Corning Hospital is one of only four hospitals in New York State to receive the distinction of being included in the IAC's Hepatitis B Birth Dose Honor Roll (http://www.immunize.org/honor-roll/birthdose/honorees.asp). The IAC’s Birth Dose Honor Roll recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that have attained high coverage levels for administering the hepatitis B vaccine at birth. Guthrie Corning Hospital immunized 96% percent of babies delivered between July 1, 2012 and August 12, 2013 and took additional steps to prevent perinatal transmission of hepatitis B.

The national standard of care to prevent hepatitis B virus infection in babies is to administer hepatitis B vaccine to all newborns before they leave the hospital or birthing center. This standard is being adopted by centers of healthcare excellence nationwide as a safety net to protect newborns from a wide range of medical errors that lead to babies being unprotected from perinatal hepatitis B infection.
