Guthrie Cancer Center Employee Wins American Cancer Society Award

Sayre, Pa. – A Guthrie Cancer Center employee has received the prestigious Excellence in Mission award from the American Cancer Society, East Central Division. Dawn Clover, MSW, is an oncology social worker with the Guthrie Cancer Center, located on the Sayre campus.

The Excellence in Mission award is presented to an individual, group, corporation, or organization that makes an extraordinary impact on the mission of the American Cancer Society through health initiatives, advocacy or research.

Karen Maurer, regional cancer control specialist for the American Cancer Society said, “Dawn is committed to the care of her patients and plays a key role in the referral program at the Guthrie Cancer Center, which connects newly-diagnosed patients to the American  Cancer Society. “

Gail Rhodes, nurse manager at the Guthrie Cancer Center, describes Dawn as, “very hard working, caring and compassionate. She goes above and beyond for the patients and is a tremendous asset to our department.”

With the American Cancer Society’s patient resource office located in the Guthrie Cancer Center, Dawn is able to refer patients to the office so that they can become educated on various American Cancer Society programs such as Look Good…Feel Better® and Road to Recovery®. As a result of Dawn’s endeavors, the number of patient referrals jumped from 210 for the period of September 2009 through May 2010 to 608 for the same period the following year. In addition to her direct contributions to the Society, she helped secure a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® grant to start a women’s support group and set up an informational library at the cancer center that contains American Cancer Society publications.
