Employment at Guthrie

ABOUT OUR AREA

Variety of Employment

Guthrie has a strong regional presence and offers diverse clinical, administrative and support employment opportunities in hospitals, clinics, regional offices, long-term care facilities and home-care settings. Whether you're looking for a job right out of high school or are a professional building your career, Guthrie is the place for you. Additionally, the northern Pennsylvania/southern New York region offers a high quality of life with a low cost of living, and Philadelphia, New York City, Buffalo, Rochester and Niagara Falls are within three hours’ drive of most Guthrie locations. Local schools are excellent, and there are a number of colleges and universities within convenient driving distance

Location

Guthrie’s Sayre campus is situated in a lush valley at the confluence of the Susquehanna and Chemung Rivers in north-central Pennsylvania. Located just a few miles from the New York border, the Sayre area is proximate to the major cities of the northeast – Philadelphia, New York City, Buffalo, Rochester and Niagara Falls are within three hours’ drive. Other Guthrie locations are also proximate to regional sites and cities of interest. The area is renowned for its maple products (syrup, sugar, candy) and wine, and is also noted for its dairy and apple production.

Living

You can choose to live in any number of communities in Bradford (PA), Chemung (NY), Tioga (NY), Broome (NY) and other counties. The region is safe, with a low crime rate and neighbors who know each other. Living options vary -- you can choose a suburban neighborhood or development, apartment living or a house in the country with surrounding acreage.

Recreation

When it comes to recreation, the region is optimally located to take advantage of almost every sort of activity imaginable – outdoor pursuits such as hiking, biking, canoeing or skiing, or other entertainment such as shopping, cultural and historical events, museums, concerts and more. Whether you enjoy championship golf or Broadway-caliber theater, winery tours or antiquing, Sayre is centrally located to take advantage of it all. It’s just a short drive to Seneca and Cayuga Lakes, the largest of the eleven Finger Lakes, all of which offer opportunities for camping, swimming, boating, horseback riding, or visiting various wine trails and New York's breathtaking Finger Lakes district which has inspired American notables from Mark Twain to Harriet Tubman. Ithaca, New York, a thriving college town that’s home to Cornell University, is located nearby and offers fine dining, cultural activities, outdoor opportunities in its many gorges and parks and more.

Binghamton, New York offers Binghamton University’s Anderson Center for the Arts, which features everything from international performing artists to student recitals. At the Broome County Arena you can catch a UHL hockey game, a concert or even the circus! And the Ross Park Zoo – which houses specimens from several endangered species, including snow leopards, a Siberian tiger, golden lion tamarins, red wolves and spectacled bears -- is a great way to spend a day with the family. The Discovery Center , a hands-on activity venue for the whole family, is located adjacent to the zoo, and offers for your imaginative adventures play areas including a grocery store, a fire truck, a TV news studio, a hospital, a bubble-blowing area, a sand area and more.

Also within the region are Elmira, New York, where Mark Twain did much of his writing, and Corning, New York, home to the world-renowned Corning, Inc. and Corning Museum of Glass.

For your winter enjoyment, downhill and cross-country skiing venues are available throughout our region. For more information about our spectacular ski areas, visit:

The climate is typical of the northeastern United States – winter generally lasts from November to early April (snowfall varies from year to year), spring moves quickly to summer, which lasts from late May to mid-September, followed by an extended autumn with a beautiful display of deciduous hardwoods and their changing leaves.

Schools

Regional public schools are excellent, and a variety of parochial and private schools are also available. All provide extracurricular opportunities in music, sports and the arts. There are numerous colleges and universities in the region -- including Cornell University, Binghamton University and Ithaca College -- for your own continuing education or that of your children.
