One Patient’s Story
Joseph Barrick of Watkins Glen, NY,
first developed reflux symptoms at age
33. After seven years of a progressive
worsening of the condition, which
included hoarseness, sore throats and
indigestion (all treated with
medication) his primary care physician
referred him to Guthrie’s Sayre Campus
for testing. Test results revealed that
he was a candidate for minimally
invasive reflux surgery, and in
mid-October, the procedure was performed
at Robert Packer Hospital. Mr. Barrick
reports that the symptoms disappeared
completely the day following surgery.
"All I have now are five tiny scars
on my stomach, plus a much healthier
outlook on life! When you have reflux,
you feel edgy because you don’t feel
good. Now my energy level is up because
I’m sleeping better and I can eat what
I want – overall, I have a better
emotional outlook."
