MANAGING WINTER ASTHMA IN ATHLETES

Today’s high school athletes have enough pressure on them to perform at a high level without the added worry of being slowed by an asthma attack. It has been estimated that the number of Americans suffering from asthma has doubled since 1980, to nearly 14 million. Tragically, the number of deaths from asthma has also increased. With the winter sports season upon us, it is imperative to recognize the symptoms of asthma since cold winter air can trigger an attack. Fortunately, there are measures to prevent or reduce the severity of asthma attacks.

Many athletes are completely unaware that they suffer from asthma until an exercise session in the cold air triggers an attack. Recognizing the symptoms and knowing how to react can save a life. The most common symptoms are coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath during or after exercise.

When practicing outdoors in the winter months, athletes should cover their mouths and noses with ski masks or scarves without compromising the airway. Playing indoor sports does not eliminate risk of an asthma attack as some athletes are affected by other factors such as dust mites, dander and being exposed to others with colds and upper respiratory infections. If you suspect an athlete has undiagnosed asthma, he/she should be evaluated by a physician as soon as possible. Those with known asthma should never be allowed to practice or participate unless the athlete has his/her medication immediately accessible.
