Summer Preparation Yields Fall Success
The school year is winding down and our athletes are looking forward to a
well-deserved break. It’s hard to believe that practice for the fall season
is less than two months away. For this reason, it is imperative to develop a
relatively well-structured plan for training to help our athletes be ready
for the start of the fall season. Appropriate advice involves:
- Aerobic training
- Acclimatization (getting used to training
in hot weather)
- Strength training
- Nutrition
- Hydration
- Overemphasis or underemphasis in any of
these areas could result in injury, illness or poor performance.
Guidelines for success:
- Be specific, but flexible. Give a timeline
of when to start workouts, frequency of workouts and how to advance. Give
enough leeway in the schedule to prevent injury or burnout.
Give written instructions. Teenagers will not remember what they don’t
see.
Be positive and encouraging to provide motivation. Explain the benefits of
the workouts as well as possible consequences of not being prepared.
Try to have informal group workouts to provide supervision and demonstrate
proper form. This will also add to team spirit.
