Shin Splints
“Shin splints” is a specific medical term given to tendonitis at the front
of the lower leg. The most common pathology in shin splints is inflammation
to the sheath surrounding the big bone of the lower leg. Symptoms usually
involve tenderness over the inside portion of the front of the lower leg
with or without swelling. Palpable lumps and/or bumps may develop over the
bone or the athlete may complain of pain when the toes or foot are bent
downward towards the ground. Shin splints may develop acutely pre-season, or
become chronic, developing slowly and getting worse throughout the season.
Shin splints can lead to more serious conditions such as stress fractures or
compartment syndromes if not taken care of properly. Treatment and activity
recommendations are different for these injuries. They, therefore, must be
differentiated from shin splints.
