RINGWORM
Close quarters in
locker rooms, sharing towels, clothing or even sports equipment can put
you at risk for contracting Ringworm. Ringworm is not caused by a worm
or a parasite, as the name implies. Ringworm infection is caused by a
fungus. These fungi live and multiply on the outer layer of the skin.
Some of these fungi produce a round spot. A proper examination by a
physician is needed to make a proper diagnosis.
Fungi are present all over our environment, including on
our bodies. They thrive in moist, warm areas, such as swimming pools,
locker rooms, saunas, and in skin folds. Ringworm is very contagious and
can be passed on by sharing contaminated towels, clothing, sports
equipment, and by direct contact.
