Nutrients for Healing and Recovery
Injuries are more
than just physical pain to athletes, and proper training, including
nutrition,
is important to help avoid injury . Once an injury has occurred,
adequate intake of nutrients that promote the healing process can help
aid the injury recovery process. Meeting overall energy needs is
essential during the injury recovery process, but more specifically,
four important nutrients for injury recovery are protein, zinc, vitamin
C, and vitamin A. Other nutrients also play roles in injury recovery
including carbohydrates, iron, copper, vitamin E, essential fatty acids,
and the B vitamins. Regularly eating foods that provide recommended
amounts of these nutrients can help athletes avoid injury in the first
place. After acute injury, metabolic rates can increase by 15%, causing
he body to require more calories to help fight off infection, as well as
to start the recovery process. After serious injury, trauma, or surgery,
metabolic rate can increase by up to 50%.
