Memory Clinic
Guthrie's
Memory Clinic opened in May 1998, and is
unique to the region. The Memory Clinic
provides diagnosis and treatment for
individuals who are experiencing
cognitive problems and symptoms of
dementia, which is defined as an
impairment of intellectual function that
can include emotional disturbances along
with deficits in other mental processes,
such as memory, abstract thinking,
judgment, speech and coordination. The
most common form of dementia for people
over age 65 is Alzheimer's
disease. To
positively diagnose dementia or
Alzheimer's, Memory Clinic staff perform
detailed examinations of various brain
faculties, such as attention, memory,
language, visual spatial ability and
executive function of the brain.
Individuals diagnosed in the initial
stages of dementia have more than a 50%
chance of halting or slowing the
progression of the disease. A
three-pronged therapeutic approach
involving medication, supportive health
care and social support are tailored to
the needs of each patient with regular
monitoring of his or her progress. For
