Sleep Lab Director Earns Board
Certification in Sleep Medicine
Guthrie neurologist and Robert Packer Hospital Sleep Lab Director Han Suk
Koh, MD, recently earned board certification in sleep medicine. Dr. Koh is
also board-certified in neurology. The American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM)
certification exam is administered in two parts: a multiple-choice written
examination that tests the applicant’s general body of knowledge in sleep
medicine and a short-answer/essay portion based on clinical and polygraphic
data. The exam covers sleep-related subjects in physiology, neuroanatomy,
biochemistry, pharmacology, endocrinology, as well as sleep/wake cycles,
stages and disorders; biological rhythms, dreaming and behavior, patient
safety and medical/legal issues, interpretation of sleep studies, diagnosis
of sleep disorders and more. According to the ABSM, certification indicates
a substantial professional commitment to sleep medicine and documents
expertise in sleep medicine to patients, professional colleagues, and
organizations. Successful completion of the examination is testimony that
the individual has devoted time to specialized training and has obtained
broad knowledge in diverse disciplines and substantial expertise in
diagnostic and treatment skills specific to the field. In short, a
board-certified sleep specialist has been evaluated by his or her peers and
found to meet high standards of knowledge and clinical competence.
