Some Commonly Asked Questions

What is a family medicine doctor?
Family Medicine is a medical specialty. A physician specializing in family medicine is not a "general practitioner," but is indeed a specialist who has completed a three-year residency in an accredited program in family medicine medicine. Your family medicine physician has seven or more years of medical training beyond college.

What about prenatal care?
We in family medicine are very pleased to deliver your baby and treat a newborn. The family centered approach to obstetrics will make your birthing experience an enjoyable one. Our family medicine physicians are well trained and experienced to care for you while you are pregnant.

The family physician treats patients of all ages and is fully qualified to treat 90 to 95 percent of a patient's health care needs.

What is a family medicine resident?
A family medicine resident is a doctor who has completed medical training. A resident is not a student but is completing a process of three training years in the specialty of family medicine and is supervised throughout each patient contact by family medicine faculty.

If you select a Resident as your family doctor, you'll get two doctors reviewing your case.
The Guthrie system is a training center for residents and with that you'll benefit from
being treated in a continuous teaching and learning environment.

What is a nurse practitioner?
A family nurse practitioner is a registered nurse with an advanced education
(Master's degree) in primary care and specialty training in family medicine. The
focus of a nurse practitioner is on health promotion and illness prevention through
teaching and counseling.

What if I need more specialized treatment?
Your family doctor is trained to recognize a broad spectrum of diseases and conditions. When referral to another specialist is indicated, your family doctor will coordinate your care and make sure you are referred to the right specialist.
