What
Our Past Scholars Are Saying About Our
Program:

Cory
Chevalier
The most amazing part of the
Guthrie clinical semester were the people
that I met there. They made sure that my
learning experience was as good as I was
willing to make it for myself. I was allowed
to observe with the vascular surgery team
and go on rounds with them every morning for
almost 2 months and spend time in the OR and
clinic with urology. The number of surgeries
that I was allowed to observe was amazing. I
have never learned so much information in
such a short time and I know that it will be
a huge leg-up for me throughout medical
school. |

In retrospect,
when I look back on the last twenty years of
my life, I know certain moments will remain
permanently imprinted in my mind and in my
heart. The last four months at Guthrie have
done just that. Prior to my clinical
semester I was confident I wanted to be a
physician, but I had no idea how deeply
rooted it was in me. Every moment I spend
interacting with patients is a moment I feel
utterly at peace with myself. No other
program is structured in such a way that
students are able to observe all facets of
the medical work and the intimate web that
is woven between all departments. Any time
I lose sight of my dream I will reflect back
upon my wonderful experience at Guthrie and
realize that despite the hardships, medicine
is my passion. Nothing will deter me from
living that dream. |

My experience at
Guthrie was simply amazing. Never before
have I had the opportunity to shadow
physicians and do original research all in
the same semester. I’ve met many great
people along with the way who have
reinforced my decision to enter medicine,
and I feel even more prepared to enter
medical school and continue on the road
ahead.

I cannot believe how fast the
semester flew by or how many terrific people
I have met in a few short months. During my
clinical rotations I was able to shadow
physicians in many departments, spend time
in the OR, as well as go out with the
helicopter team and travel with a Hospice
nurse. These experiences were complimented
by alternative medicine and medical ethics
discussions at Wilkes
University, as well as working with a physician on a clinical
research project. All of these experiences
gave me a better appreciation for what a
medical career truly entails, as well as the
traits needed to have a trusting
physician-patient relationship. Honestly, I
do not know how to thank everyone who made
this semester possible, but it has truly
been a memorable experience.

As a Guthrie Scholar, I have
been extremely fortunate to shadow a wide
range of specialties and actively
participate in current scientific research
through Robert
Packer Hospital, the Guthrie
Research Foundation, the Guthrie Clinic and
its affiliates. During our Guthrie clinical
semester, we have the opportunity to apply
our theoretical knowledge from 3.5 years of
undergraduate education from Wilkes
University into a practical, clinical healthcare setting. We are
allowed to observe from a wide range of
rotations and shadow several friendly
healthcare professionals from cardiothoracic
surgeons to midwives. With a research
experience in either clinical or basic
science, we are given an in-depth
understanding into scientific research
methods and techniques. This semester has
been a great beginning to our medical
careers as we enter medical school and the
community as future physicians! |
