 INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY

Educational Opportunities at Guthrie

Guthrie/Robert Packer Hospital offers students an opportunity during their third and fourth years to rotate to Guthrie/Robert packer Hospital as part of a required clerkship or an elective experience in many varied areas of study.

 

 

Medical School Affiliations

Guthrie has formal affiliation agreements with SUNY Health Science Center’s Clinical Campus, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Drexel University College of Medicine, and Jefferson Medical College.

Students from other LCME accredited medical schools are encouraged to inquire about rotations at our hospital.

 

Medicine Electives

 

 


 

CLINICAL DERMATOLOGY- 4 Credits
INSTRUCTORS: Drs. Charles R. Fedele, Richard Martines, Kimberly Silvers, and Henry T. Shenfield

PREREQUISITES: Medicine Clerkship

MAXIMUM NUMBER

OF STUDENTS: 1, pending Department of Medicine Education approval.

WEEKLY ACTIVITIES: Dermatologic slide teaching, conferences, inpatient and outpatient contacts.

ELECTIVE DESCRIPTION: It is our goal to instruct the students on how to describe dermatologic lesions, how to take a good dermatologic history, and how to begin to treat the dermatologic patient. Ample outpatient experience as well as inpatient consultation exposure is available. The diagnosis and treatment of skin disease will be stressed as well as cutaneous signs of systemic disease.

READING: A reading list is available.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE: Patient work-ups. Evaluation based upon the ability to take a dermatologic history and to describe what is observed.

Clinical Pulmonary Medicine - 5 Credits
INSTRUCTORS: Drs. James Walsh and Joseph Matthews

PREREQUISITES: 3rd year medicine clerkship

MAXIMUM NUMBER
OF STUDENTS:
1, pending Department of Medicine Education approval.

WEEKLY ACTIVITIES: Seminars and conferences, inpatient and outpatient contacts, pulmonary and exercise laboratory; attendance at bronchoscopies.

ELECTIVE DESCRIPTION: An introduction to clinical pulmonary disease. By the end of the rotation, the student should be able to: recognize basic normal and abnormal patterns on chest x-rays; analyze pulmonary function studies of moderate difficulty; recognize clinical patterns of, analyze pathophysiology of, and prescribe an appropriate treatment program for the following clinical problems: COPD, asthma, lung carcinoma, granulomatous disease of the chest, acute respiratory failure, hypoxemia; demonstrate skillful physical examination of chest; demonstrate basic familiarity with ventilator management of respiratory failure. Discuss indications for: thoracentesis, mediastinoscopy, open lung biopsy, and bronchoscopy.

READING: Felson’s Basic Text in Chest Roentgenography; West: Physiology Edition: Harrison’s Principles of Interim Medicine, 11th ed., Part V.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE: Patient workups, demonstration of competence in reading x-rays, participation in daily clinical activities, and ability to synthesize appropriate clinical planning.

IS PERFORMANCE DISCUSSED WITH STUDENT: Yes, during the course. Expectations discussed at onset of rotation.

NOTE: Student will fully participate in activities of section as subintern.

Critical Care Medicine of Internal Medicine -  6 Credits

PREREQUISITE: Completion of third year clerkships

MAXIMUM NUMBER
OF STUDENTS:
1, pending Department of Medicine Education approval.

WEEKLY ACTIVITIES: Attendance at lectures, seminars, and conferences. Inpatient contact and night call. Student presentations. Management principles as they apply to ICU.

ELECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Provide the student with the opportunity to be involved with patient care in a medical ICU service and ICU with surgical consults. Obtain a generalized understanding of critical care medicine and related areas; x-rays, bronchoscopies, invasive lines, hemodynamics, nutritional support, ventilator management, weaning techniques, shock, seizure, EKG, sepsis, and more.

READING: A standard textbook of medicine.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE: Written examination, patient work-ups, conference presentations, and clinical skills.

IS PERFORMANCE DISCUSSED WITH STUDENT: Yes, during and at the end of the course.

Emergency Medicine - 4 Credits

WEEKLY ACTIVITIES: Patient contacts

ELECTIVE DESCRIPTION:

  1. Initial assessment and care of common medical problems.
  2. Initial assessment and care of serious medical-surgical problems.
  3. Assessment and care of common pediatric problems.
  4. Expertise in minor surgical procedures.
  5. Assessment and care of orthopedic problems.
  6. The integration and affirmations of prior learned medical knowledge.
  7. The realization of practical utilization of learned medical knowledge.
  8. An overview exposure of Emergency Department patient populations, as well as exposure to various subspecialty problems and areas of interest.

READING: Reading materials will be made available.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE: Patient work-ups (history and physical)
