INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM
LETTER FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR - INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM
It is our goal to achieve a residency program that would make us as senior staff, want to be residents again. I think we have achieved that end and have developed a program that will produce residents who function easily as tertiary care specialists as well as primary care internists. At our institution, you will see patients from adolescence to octogenarians. They will have maladies from the common cold up to our recent experience with a patient with inhalation anthrax. This broad spectrum is available because we are a tertiary care hospital in a community that also requires primary care services.
The primary faculty is equally divided between subspecialists and primary care internists. While the primary focus of the first year is hospital patients, by the end of the third year, 33% of the resident’s time will be spent in an ambulatory environment. Morning report, noon conference and teaching rounds are daily events for every resident. Special rotations include systems-based practice and occupational medicine. This program will give you all the skills and training you need to select a career path and function in the 21st century Felix J. DeSio, M.D. Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program
