Packer Hospital offers students an opportunity during their third and
fourth years to rotate to Guthrie/Robert Packer Hospital as part of a required clerkship or an
elective experience in many varied areas of study.

has formal affiliation agreements with SUNY Health Science Center’s
Clinical Campus, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Jefferson Medical College.
Students from all other LCME
accredited medical schools are encouraged to inquire about rotations at
our hospital.

WEEKLY ACTIVITIES: Lectures,
seminars, and conferences, inpatient and outpatient contacts.
ELECTIVE DESCRIPTION: This
course is designed to acquaint the student with the pathophysiology and
multidisciplinary management of benign and malignant diseases of the
liver, bile duct, and pancreas. The student will participate in the
evaluation of patients at presentation, the surgical procedure, and the
postoperative care. Principles of surgical oncology, interpretation of
diagnostic imaging, foregut anatomy, and basic techniques of
post-operative care will be stressed. Special emphasis will be placed on
liver physiology and its relationship to the clinical course following
major hepatectomy. The student will be an integral part of the surgical
team and will work closely with residents and faculty.

WEEKLY ACTIVITIES: Patient
contacts: inpatient/outpatient, scrub in operating room on cardiac surgery
cases and general thoracic cases. Night call is optional.
ELECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Become
familiar with the following:
- Cardiopulmonary pathophysiology
- Critical care management
- A basic knowledge of extracorporeal
circulation
- Diagnose and treat lung diseases with
emphasis on lung cancer
READING: A textbook on
surgery is required. (Spencer, Sabiston)

Acting Internship - 4 Credits |

Surgical Clerkship; three full years of medical college
MAXIMUM NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 2,
pending Department of Medical Education approval.
WEEKLY ACTIVITIES: Attendance
at conferences, resident rounds, and special seminars. Completion of
journal reports.
ELECTIVE DESCRIPTION: An
intensive introduction for the senior student to clinical surgery.
Opportunity to manage routines during the pre- and post-operative period.
Student will be part of a surgical residency team and will function as an
intern on the team. Educational material will be presented during daily
rounds with the residents and attending staff and through education
conferences directed towards the surgical resident staff. In the OR, the
student will be exposed to all aspects of surgical techniques and may
function as the first or second assistant in the surgical team. A more
advanced exposure to the technical procedures will be provided as the
student functions in the capacity of first and second assistant in
surgical cases.
READING: Voluntary.
Extensive reference library available to the student.
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE: Resident
and attending evaluation on a daily basis of history and physical. General
assays of fund of knowledge which the student displays while on service.
IS PERFORMANCE DISCUSSED WITH STUDENT: Yes,
open discussion with the student regarding his performance is policy.

Surgical
Critical Care - 4 Credits |

WEEKLY ACTIVITIES: Attendance
at lectures, seminars, and conferences. Inpatient contact and night call.
Student presentations. Management principles as they apply to ICU.
ELECTIVE DESCRIPTION: Provide
the student with the opportunity to be involved with patient care in a
surgical ICU and with ICU consults. Obtain a generalized understanding of
critical care medicine and related areas; x-rays, bronchoscopies, invasive
lines, hemodynamics, nutritional support, ventilator management, weaning
techniques, shock, seizure, EKG, sepsis, and more.

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE:
Written exams, patient work-ups, conference presentations, and clinical
skills.
