OSTEOPATHIC
FAMILY MEDICINE AND MANIPULATIVE
TREATMENT RESIDENCY
Guthrie
is proud to offer training in
Osteopathic Family Medicine and
Manipulative Treatment. Ours is
a combined internship/family
practice residency (as opposed
to a separate, rotating
internship and two-year family
medicine residency). We feel
that this provides the optimal
environment for education and
personal growth. The osteopathic
intern is an integral part of
the family medicine team right
from Day One. He/she functions
as a first-year Family Medicine
Resident while simultaneously
fulfilling the requirements of
the Osteopathic Internship. The PGY-II and PGY- III years are
just a continuum of this
training. This structure allows
three years to develop close
relationships with faculty staff
and peers, thus facilitating
learning and growth, as well as
three years to develop a panel
of continuity patients and make
a lasting contribution to the
lives of those patients.
Family
medicine training at Guthrie
helps you to realize your own
goals and potential and become
the type of family physician
that you want to be. We offer
extensive opportunities in
office-based procedures,
obstetrics and urgent care. We
strongly emphasize the biopsychosocial model with
extensive training in the
doctor-patient relationship.
Excellent inpatient training is
also provided throughout the
three years of training. Surveys
of graduates show that they
overwhelmingly feel that they
were well prepared for their
practices.
The
knowledge and application of
Osteopathic Principles and
Practice are strongly emphasized
throughout the three years of
osteopathic family medicine
training. All osteopathic
interns and residents meet
weekly with Donald E Phykitt D.O.,
Guthrie’s Director of
Osteopathic Medical Education.
Dr Phykitt is dually Board
certified in Family Medicine by
the ACGME and the ACOFP. He has
completed fellowships in both
Osteopathic manipulation and
Sports Medicine. Weekly sessions
include didactics, hands on
practice sessions, OMT clinic
and bedside teaching rounds. Use
of OMT is strongly encouraged in
both the family medicine center
and inpatient settings. A
combination of strong community
interest in OMT and few
providers in the region results
in very strong demand for
manipulation in our office. OMT
clerkships are available, so you
can experience this osteopathic
teaching first hand.
In
conclusion, Guthrie gives you
the perfect opportunity to learn
and practice Osteopathic Family
Medicine in a strongly academic,
yet warm and supportive
atmosphere. We encourage you to
contact us with any questions.
