RESIDENCY

FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM

Three Years of Dynamic Learning

The Guthrie Family Medicine residency is a small program which will have a large impact on your professional career as a family physician.

Guthrie FM residents harvest the benefits of the highest quality medical training delivered in an environment of teamwork and personal attention. The program’s smaller size (4-4-4) allows each resident to become an essential member of the team, building genuine camaraderie between residents and attendings. Our location in northeastern Pennsylvania is ideal for those interested in practicing in a rural setting, yet our status as a regional tertiary care center gives residents access to an extraordinary range of cases. Residents learn traditional medicine as well as the latest medical technology from experienced physicians, supported by a multidisciplinary team of nurse practitioners, physician assistants, athletic trainers, and psychologists. Guthrie subspecialists are an integral part of the medical education culture and are readily accessible. Subspecialists welcome the opportunity to both teach and consult.

Guthrie FM residency is a dually-accredited AOA/ACGME program with a combined internship/family medicine residency (as opposed to a separate, rotating internship and two-year family medicine residency). Dual accreditation allows the resident to become board-certified by the ABFM and the ABOFM. This provides the optimal environment for education and personal growth. The osteopathic intern is an integral part of the family medicine residency team. The resident functions as a first-year Family Medicine Resident while simultaneously fulfilling the requirements of the Osteopathic Internship. The PGYII and PGY III years are a continuum of this training. Click here to learn more about our Combined Osteopathic Internship/Osteopathic Residency.

Guthrie FM Residents can choose from a number of 'focus' areas depending upon their interests and future practice needs. These focus areas include obstetrics, urgent care, sports medicine and hospitalist medicine to name a few.

Rocking Chair Project - 2007

As of 2006, all 39 residency graduates since the beginning of the residency program in 1993 have passed the ABFM certification examination on their first attempt. Many residents have published or presented their scholarly activity and research in peer-reviewed journals or at regional and national meetings. In addition, many of our graduates have continued their careers within the Guthrie system.

If you desire outstanding family medicine training that will prepare you for a lifetime of professional satisfaction, you are invited to explore the contents of our website. If you have any questions, or would like additional information, please contact us via phone, email or by personal visit.

Family Medicine residents at Guthrie receive broad-based preparation that includes not only standard clinical procedures, but also training in ethics, geriatrics, family-centered obstetrical care, sports medicine, occupational and preventive medicine. Residents are members of a multi-specialty health care team and are able to see patients in a variety of clinical settings. Guthrie processes resident applications only through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). The application due date and match day are in March each year.
