Evidence based medicine is important at Guthrie. In order to provide residents access to the medical literature numerous avenues are open:

• 24-hour turn around of journal articles from the onsite Beck library that houses approximately 800 journals. Articles from other journals are available on interlibrary loan.
• 115 journals available full text online.

For residents seeking secondary information sources online:

• 26 full text online reference books from Stat-ref
• Scientific American online
• Cochrane library online
• Through a collaborative arrangement with SUNY: OVID and hundreds of additional full text journals online.
• Access to the internet from residency offices and from numerous locations throughout the hospital.

Use of information systems in patient care:

• Patient information available in the clinical repository dating back to 1993.
• Imaging reports, histories and physicals available online in hours.
• Outpatient dictated notes online in a day or two.
• Searchable online laboratory information system.
• Micromedix pharmacy information, drug interaction query, and alternative medicine databases available online.
• Epic-electronic order entry system used throughout RPH

Use of information systems within residencies:

• Widespread use of e-mail.
• Support for the PALM OS platform.
• Computers in resident offices and throughout resident work areas.
• Conference areas have online computer projectors to facilitate group learning during morning report by accessing reference information in real time.
