Introduction
At Robert Packer Hospital we recognize that a hospitalization can be stressful for patients, as well as their family members and other loved ones.  We also recognize that the comfort and company that family members and loved ones provide through their visits often brings a level of reassurance to patients that is invaluable.  Staying in touch with these very important people from patients’ lives can be important to the healing process, even while in the hospital.  Patients are our first priority, and as such we encourage visitors to review the following policy designed to accommodate both visitors and patients.

We ask that patients receive no more than two visitors at a time.  There will be times when, in order to provide care to patients, visitors may be asked to leave the room for a short period of time.  Please also note that occasionally visitation may have to be restricted in order for patients to have adequate quiet and rest time.  In order to protect all of our patients it is requested that visitors who are sick with colds or flu-like symptoms postpone their visit until their illness has resolved.

Hospitals can be busy places, especially when staff must respond quickly to situations.  Because of our concerns for the safety of children we ask for the following:

  • Please check with a nurse before bringing children under 12 years of age to visit.

  • Adult supervision is required for children under the age of 12

  • Children’s visit shall be brief in nature

  • For the comfort of our patients, disruptive behavior on the part of children is unacceptable.

Critical Care Units
Please check with the nurse (you may use the telephones in the waiting rooms) before visiting. Because of the patients’ illness and need for intensive care, visits will be for short periods of time (every two hours between 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.) and limited to two persons at a time.

Patient confidentiality guidelines require that we limit our discussions about patients and their conditions to only those individuals who are designated by patients to receive this information. Because this is often difficult to arrange with patients who are critically ill, we advise families that an effective alternative may be for the family/loved ones group to select one representative to receive daily updates on the patient’s condition.  This person should be willing to regularly relay information to other family members/significant others.  Arrangements for updates to a family representative may be made with the admitting nurse.  All other inquiries made to the unit will receive a brief report only (good, fair, serious, or critical condition) of patients’ conditions.

Behavioral Health Services
Daily Visiting Hours       5:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m.

All visitors are required to check in at the reception desk on the main level of the Behavioral Health Center.  Additional visitor information will be available.

LDRP
In accordance with our philosophy of family centered care we have adopted an open visitation policy. (Visitors of medical/surgical patients on this unit will follow the same visitation hours as those for other medical/surgical units).  Although we have no set times for visitation, siblings and other children are not allowed to remain overnight. One adult support person is allowed to remain overnight if the patient wishes.  During labor more than 2 visitors at a time may be distracting to the patient….please keep that in mind.

Because new mothers and their babies need rest we do have other unit guidelines that have been established.  Please ask the patient or her nurse to provide you with this information.

Facility Entrance Points
During normal business hours, visitors may enter the facility through any of the primary entrances to the facility.  For the safety of everyone, after 9:00 PM each night the only public access to the facility is through the Emergency Department.  Visitors who arrive after that hour must report to the Security Office (located in the Emergency Department) to obtain a visitor’s pass.  An overhead announcement will be made at 8:00 p.m. reminding all visitors who wish to remain in the facility to obtain a visitor’s pass from the Security Office.  Security Personnel are available 24 hours a day for assistance and may be contacted at extension 4207.
