Some common ways to make a gift are discussed below.  We recommend that you consult your tax advisor before making a gift that has income or estate tax implications.

Appreciated Property

Furnishings, equipment, and gifts of appreciated property such as artwork, antiques, or other valuable collections or items may be used for charitable gifts to Guthrie and will provide you with a charitable gift tax deduction.  Some gifts of this type may be usable in a Guthrie facility (furnishings for a waiting room, for example); others (such as a classic car, for example) may be sold by Guthrie to meet an area of current need. If you are interested in making a gift of appreciated property, please contact Guthrie Resource Development to discuss your donation before proceeding.

Bargain Sale Gifts

Bargain-sale gifts enable donors to make a gift to Guthrie by selling real property to Guthrie for less than fair market value. The difference between market value and the price paid by Guthrie is considered a gift.

Bequests

Federal estate and gift tax laws encourage individuals to remember organizations like Guthrie in their wills. Generally speaking, there is no limit on the amount your estate can deduct for a charitable bequest.  A typical bequest may read as follows: "I give, devise, and bequeath the sum of $___ (or a percentage of my estate) to Guthrie Health, Sayre, Pennsylvania, and a tax-exempt corporation, to be used for its general corporate purposes.”  A donor can also restrict a bequest to a particular program or entity within Guthrie Health.

Cash Gifts

Cash gifts are the simplest form of gift to make.  Cash gifts frequently are made to meet areas of immediate need, to memorialize or honor an individual, or to participate in Guthrie’s annual campaign.

The Guthrie Charitable Gift Annuity

A Guthrie Charitable Gift Annuity is a contract between Guthrie and a donor.  A donor transfers cash or property to Guthrie in the form of a gift annuity and in return receives a fixed sum of money for a period measured by one or two lives.  The donor may be eligible to receive a charitable gift tax deduction in the year the gift is made.  In addition, part of the donor’s annual annuity payment is considered tax-free income.

Life Insurance

Existing or new life insurance policies may be used as a charitable gift to Guthrie by:

  • Donating an existing policy directly to Guthrie (charitable gift tax deduction is for the cash value plus any future premiums you pay).

  • Donating the dividends only (charitable gift tax deduction is the same as making a cash gift).

  • Donating a paid-up policy (charitable gift tax deduction is limited to the cash surrender value of the policy).

  • Buying a new policy and naming Guthrie as the beneficiary (charitable gift tax deduction is limited to premiums paid each year).

Real Estate

A gift of a home, farm, or other real estate can be made to Guthrie.  If the donor wishes a "life interest" for the donor and a survivor can be retained.  Under this option, the donor continues to use the real estate, receives an immediate income tax deduction, and avoids estate tax on the value of the property.

Retirement Plan Designation

You may designate Guthrie as the recipient of any portion of your IRA (Individual Retirement Account), SRA (Supplemental Retirement Account), pension or profit-sharing plan, mutual fund, or other retirement savings that remain after your death.  During your life, you maintain complete control and access to the funds.  Individuals who make a gift of retirement monies receive an estate tax deduction.

Stocks, Bonds, and Other  Securities

Giving stock, bonds, or other securities is a common method of charitable giving and can enable donors to save twice on their taxes.  Donors realize an immediate charitable gift deduction tax for the full market value of the gift (for securities, there is a minimum), and may not have to pay capital gains on any increase in the stock's value above its original cost.

The Guthrie Trust

There are many types of trusts, including charitable lead trusts, charitable remainder trusts, living trusts and more.  Donors interested in creating a Guthrie Trust should be aware that there are several forms it can take including the lead trust, remainder trust, and living trust.  Each trust should be tailored to the specific resources and requirements of the donor.  Benefits to the trust creator can include:

  • Income earned by the assets of a Guthrie Trust will be paid to the donor for the donor's lifetime (the trust can be created to cover the lifetimes of other members of the donor's family as well).

  • An income tax deduction for a portion of the full market value of the gift (the amount of the deduction is determined depends on the amount of the gift, the amount of income the donor wishes to receive and the donor's age).

  • No capital gains on the transfer of the assets to the trust if the donor uses appreciated property to fund the trust.

  • No assets go through probate after the lifetime of the donor or other income recipients named by the trust - thereby reducing costs to the donor’s estate.

  •

If you are interested in establishing a Guthrie Trust, please contact Guthrie Resource Development to discuss your planned gift. Guthrie encourages you to discuss your plans with your financial advisor.

Wills

Guthrie can be named as a recipient of money, property, securities, or other items in your will.  Please let us know if you have included Guthrie in your will and your gift to Guthrie will take place prior to the settlement of your estate.
