Medical Students

Medical student clerkships and electives: (Medical students must be in good standing and matriculating in a U.S. Medical School)

Rotating medical students at Guthrie have the opportunity to become an active member of our medical team. As a team member, the medical student attends teaching rounds and conferences, takes patient histories, performs physical examinations, and assists in the operating room and with other procedures. For clinical services, the medical student has designated supervisors, who will provide continuous instruction and supervise all patient-care duties.

Elective and clerkship programs at Guthrie offer medical students clinical rotations that foster growth of medical knowledge through direct patient-care experiences.

Affiliated students have the opportunity to complete third-year core clerkships. Guthrie also offers opportunities in more than 18 clinical electives, see 2009-2010 elective book.

Guthrie-Affiliated Medical Schools: Rotations for medical students from medical schools affiliated with Guthrie/Robert Packer Hospital are scheduled in advance through the individual schools. Schools must provide clearance documentation of criminal and child abuse background checks at the time of orientation.
Non-Affiliated Medical Schools: Rotations for medical students from medical schools not affiliated with Guthrie/Robert Packer Hospital are scheduled in advance by the student through the Guthrie Student Affairs Office.
Unaffiliated medical students must:
If not already established, secure from the school a signed affiliation agreement, which can be forwarded directly from the school to the Guthrie Student Affairs Coordinator (all original affiliations are reviewed by the Vice President, Risk Management for approval).

" Instructor in the surgical skills lab was a terrific person to work with and learn from. He spent several hours with myself and a group of other students in the skills lab, demonstrating everything that could be done in the lab. He also taught us multiple surgical knot tying methods and let us experiment with several different laparoscopic surgical instruments. I have not come across any one else in different hospitals that I’ve rotated at yet that has shown so much interest in teaching students surgical skills."
